White villages in La Axarquía

The region of La Axarquía, surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea that bathes its southern flanks and the mountains of the Sierras of Tejeda, Alhama and Almijara Natural Park that separate it from neighboring Granada. Unknown to many, it offers a varied landscape, of small narrow-streeted, white-colored villages of Arab origin, such as Frigiliana, Competa or Comares, as well as olive groves, vineyards and subtropical crops, namely the avocado and mango.

The region is divided into 5 tourist routes, the Wine Route, Sun and Avocado Route, Raisin Route, Mudejar Route (especially recommended for touring) and the Mountain Olive Oil Route. La Viñuela is located in the latter, since a good part of its lands are dedicated to the cultivation of the olive tree of the verdial variety, from which an excellent extra virgin olive oil is produced. This olive oil can be purchased at the oil mill in Los Romanes.

Undoubtedly, olive oil is the basis of our cuisine, where dishes such as the baked goat, typical of the town of Canillas de Aceituno, the ‘ajoblanco’ cold soup or the excellent fish from our coasts stand out. You cannot miss out on trying a sardine skewer or ‘espeto’ at a beach bar, the cane honey of Frigiliana, unique in Europe, carob oil cake or our raisins with protected designation of origin.

Our location, in the heart of the region gives us the possibility of enjoying a quiet landscape in the center, always with the backdrop of the waters of the La Viñuela Reservoir and the mountains of the Sierra Tejeda, with the coast located just 20 minutes away, where you can find all the services you need, as well as shopping centers, golf courses, a marina, and of course enjoy the beaches and beach bars in the more than 40 km of coastline that the region offers, from the most open dark sand beaches to the small coves in the Nerja area.

Activities

If something dominates the view from Casas de Cantoblanco, it is undoubtedly the Lake Viñuela and the Sierra Tejeda Natural Park in the background. As you can imagine, these two natural spaces offer us a number of possibilities to enjoy them in an active way. Near the houses, we have the possibility of traveling on several trails either on foot or mountain bike, such as those recommended below. Our most daring visitors can attempt the ascent to La Maroma, which is the highest peak in the province of Malaga at over 2000 meters high.

Lake Viñuela and Sierra Tejeda

In the Lake, thanks to the companies we collaborate with, we have the possibility of practicing water sports, renting a kayak for a peaceful outing, taking the opportunity to learn to navigate a sail boat, or practicing windsurfing or paddle surfing.

Aquatic sports Lake Viñuela

We can also rent mountain bikes near the reservoir and go on 4x4 excursions or a combined hike on foot and off-roading around Casas de Cantoblanco or the nearby natural areas such as the ‘Torcal de Antequera’ or the ‘Tajos de Alhama’.
